Suburban "mommy blogger" Lacey Spears was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison on Wednesday, April 8, for murdering her 5-year-old son Garnett with deadly doses of salt.
Spears, 27, received media attention after she detailed her son's mysterious illness for years on her blog "Garnett's Journey." Spears also took to social media to share updates on her son's condition, writing about his health struggle up until he passed away on Jan. 23, 2014.
It was ruled that Garnett had died from an overdose of sodium -- forced into his feeding tube by Spears -- which caused the
child's brain to swell.
The single mother was found guilty of second-degree murder last month. Spears did not testify during her 14-day trial.
"In many respects your crime is unfathomable in its cruelty," acting state Supreme Court Justice Robert Neary said to the New York state resident (via The Journal News). "How could a mother ever treat her child in such a callous, inhumane manner?"
The defense argued that Spears suffered from a medical illness called Munchausen By Proxy, which causes a parent to exaggerate or be misleading about their child's condition, typically to seek attention.
